Comparing Abductive Theories

چکیده
This paper introduces two methods for comparing explanation power of different abductive theories. One is comparing explainability for observations, and the other is comparing explanation contents for observations. Those two measures are represented by generality relations over abductive theories. The generality relations are naturally related to the notion of abductive equivalence introduced by Inoue and Sakama. We also analyze the computational complexity of these relations.

A Graph Theoretic Optimisation of Temporal Abductive Validation
Abductive validation for a theory T expressed in language LQCM is known to be exponential. Despite this, abductive validation over LQCM using the HT4 abductive inference engine is a useful technique for a large range of real-world theories. However, doubts persist about LTQCM: a time-based variant of LQCM. In LTQCM, abductive validation is executed for for theories used in long time-based simul...
متن کاملOn the Practicality of Abductive Validation
An abductive framework is described for validating theories using a library of known or desired behaviour. Abduction is known to be NP-hard which suggests that this framework is impractical for anything other than small theories. The computational limits of the framework is therefore explored. We find that abductive validation is a practical tool for the KBS we see in contemporary practice.
متن کاملLearning Abductive Theories
In this paper we study the problem of learning abductive theories with particular interest in learning theories for the problem of attribute-based classification as studied in the area of machine learning. The paper proposes a new alternative formulation of this class of learning problems where abduction takes an integral part in the formulation of the appropriate theories and more importantly ...
متن کاملA Causal Theory of Abduction
The paper provides a uniform representation of abductive reasoning in the logical framework of causal inference relations. The representation covers in a single framework not only traditional, ‘classical’ forms of abduction, but also abductive reasoning in diagnosis, theories of actions and change, and abductive logic programming.
متن کاملSemantics and Complexity of Abduction from Default Theories
Since logical knowledge representation is commonly based on nonclassical formalisms like default logic, autoepistemic logic, or circumscript ion, it is necessary to perform abductive reasoning f rom theories of nonclassical logics. In this paper, we investigate how abduction can be performed from theories in default logic. Different modes of abduction are plausible, based on credulous and skept...
